The Research Group on Cultural Heritage and Landscapes (Gipypac) of the University of the Basque Country and the Research Project Archaeology of Local Societies in Southern Europe: Identities, Grouping and Territorialities (5th–11th c.). ARQSOLO is organising an International Conference on Local Societies in Early Medieval Europe, which will take place on October 21–23, 2024, at the Faculty of Arts of the University of the Basque Country.

This conference aims to address, from a European perspective, the spatialisation of the socio-political practices that shaped early medieval local societies. The concept of local society needs to be clarified since it has different meanings. However, in this project is an arena of interaction, contestation, dispute, and negotiation between active agents at different scales. Its usefulness is twofold. On the one hand, it allows us to contextualise the socio-political practices in localities, assessing the multiple agencies of elites and subaltern groups in relational terms. On the other hand, the variations in chronological and spatial terms of local societies make it possible to understand the forms of articulation of the surrounding socio-political systems and to assess their actual impact at different scales.

Some of the topics to be analysed in this seminar are methodological and include how to identify and study the political dimension of subaltern groups, what constitutes and how a community is constructed, what practices and records make political action visible in local societies, what mechanisms are at work in local societies to regulate dissent and conflict and how they can be analysed, what heuristic limits the preserved registers have in order to identify everyday socio-political practices.

From a conceptual point of view, the aim is to address the mechanisms of production of localities and local societies, the concept of macro- and micro-politics, the integration and meaning of the use of different communicative technologies in socio-political practices, or the performative character of politics in local societies.

From a thematic point of view, the role of collectives and communities in conflict resolution processes, the forms of construction, erosion, and use of symbolic capital in local societies, the spatiality of the foci of political action, or the limits of the capacity for the agency of the powerful mediated by subaltern groups and distant elites will be addressed.
